Location
The Roman colony Augusta Raurica (Latin: Colonia Augusta Rauricorum, ‘’City of Augustus in the Land of the Raurici’’) is located approximately ten kilometers east of Basel, Switzerland, on the southern bank of the Rhine. It was officially founded in 44 BC and became the largest city in the region. Around 200 AD, about 10’000 people lived here. The civilian settlement lasted until around 280 AD.
Today, the ancient settlement area extends across Augst and Kaiseraugst. The Roman city has been minimally built over and is gradually being explored through excavations.
